This course introduces students to criminal law and procedure covering the basic principles of criminal liability, including the statutory sources of criminal offences and the concept of burden of proof. Students learn about criminal offences that proceed by way of summary conviction to prepare paralegals for their increased role in criminal trial matters. Basic structure of the Criminal Code will be covered as well as a detailed analysis of police investigatory powers, Charter protections, various defences, the trial process, sentencing, and appeal rights and procedures.
Introduction to the Legal System or equivalent knowledge and experience.
Students enrolled in this course receive text and/or other related resource materials. There are two assignments and three tests to evaluate student progress for this course. Participants who receive 70% or higher overall will receive a certificate.

Module 2: Police Powers; Summary Convictions; Investigation of Crime; Search and Seizure
Module 3: Pre-Trial; Arrest; The Charter and the Criminal Code; Remedies for Infringement; Pre-Trial Detention and Bail
Module 4: Trail; Disclosure; Pleas, Bargains and Elections; The People and the Process; Informations and Indictments
Module 5: Standard of Proof and Post-Trial; Proof of Facts; Defences; Sentencing; Appeals
